MULLAN, Idaho - Rescue teams planned to work overnight to try to find a miner who was trapped more than a mile underground after a tunnel collapsed at a northern Idaho silver mine, a spokeswoman for the mining company said Saturday. "We are doing every effort possible to expedite this in a safe manner," Hecla Mining Co. spokeswoman Melanie Hennessey. "It is a rescue mission." [1] MULLAN, ID - Hecla Mining crews were still digging this evening for a miner trapped more than a mile underground at the Lucky Friday Mine. Company officials continued to call their efforts a rescue operation nearly 24 hours after the roof of a tunnel where the miner was extracting silver-bearing ore collapsed. [2] A RESCUE operation was underway today at a mine in Mullan, Idaho, after one man became trapped when part of the mine collapsed, KREM-TV reported. Hecla Mining Company confirmed that part of its Lucky Friday Mine in Mullan - which is about 140km east of Spokane, Wash. -- caved in at around 5.30pm local time Friday, according to KHQ-TV. [3] The Hecla Mining Company has confirmed that there was a ground fall break at the Lucky Friday Mine in Mullan late Friday. HMC is not confirming how many miners are involved or their condition but rescue operations are underway. [4] MULLAN - Hecla Mining Company rescue teams have been working around the clock to rescue a miner who was trapped underground by a "localized ground fall," or cave in, Friday at the Lucky Friday Mine.'' [5]
The mine employs roughly 275 workers, about 50 of whom were underground in various parts of the mine when the collapse occurred, Hennessey said. Glen Gotcher, 57, who worked in the mine for 28 years and spent the last seven working in the mill above ground, said the community is staying positive as they await word about the missing miner. "This is something people are used to feeling, because when the rock burst happens, you can feel it all over town," Gotcher said as he gathered with other miners at the Smokeshop Bar in downtown Mullan. Others have died in the mine, but not recently, Gotcher said. On its website, Hecla describes itself as the oldest U.S.-based precious metals mining company in North America and the largest silver producer in the U.S. It is headquartered in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. [6] A missing miner is presumed trapped underground at Hecla'''s flagship Lucky Friday mine in Idaho'''s Silver Valley mining district as miners work to stabilize the ground in order to rescue the unidentified man. [7] Hecla Mining Company says extra equipment and expertise is being flown in from the east coast to assist in the rescue. "Whether you know the people or not, when they're trapped you feel it," said Jim Zingler. The retired miner lives in Mullan and says his father helped pull people out of the Sunshine Mine Disaster back in 1972. That Silver Valley mine disaster claimed 91 lives. "I think it's a tragic thing when they get stuck underground, you know they only got one hole to come up," added Zingler. Mining has always been the Silver Valley's life line, which is why this tragedy hits close to home in a town with a population of 840. [8]
"I was scheduled to work today but I'm not working today because of situation," said Eric Patterson who showed up to the press conference for an update. The miner is hoping for his co-worker's safe return home. "Miners are just like brothers, you want to see them come out," said Patterson. Hecla Mining Company says it hasn't had a serious accident like this in a very long time at the silver, lead and zinc mine which has been in operation for 69 years. [8] Hecla Mining Company has operated the Lucky Friday Mine, a deep underground silver, lead and zinc mine, since 1958, according to the company's website. "We're doing everything we can to reach the employee and will continue to make every effort as long as it takes, ensuring all the while that we are using safe methods in the process in order to avoid risk to other people," Baker said. Mining company officials say they'll look into the collapse after the rescue. They are unsure of what may have caused the ground fall, but say there was no blasting going on around that time or area of the mine. The mining company says it's providing professional support and emotional counseling for the miner's family and other employees. [9] "Two Hecla employees were working in the area where the ground fall occurred one is safe and the company doesn't have communication with the other," said Hecla Mining Company President & CEO, Paul Baker. [8]

April 16, 2011 in News, Idaho MULLAN, ID - Hecla Mining crews were still digging for a miner trapped this evening more than a mile underground at the Lucky Friday Mine. [13] BOISE, Idaho (AP) - Hecla Mining Co.' s president says rescuers are doing everything they can to reach a missing miner at a northern Idaho silver mine where a tunnel collapsed more than a mile underground. [14]
As of Saturday afternoon, the missing miner hadn't contacted anyone above ground. The mine's former vice-president explained there aren't communication devices in the place where the miner was, and he would have to get to another area to make a call above ground. Hecla is using its own mine safety rescue teams. Company officials say there is rescue equipment on site, but they are flying additional equipment in from the east coast. That equipment will allow crews to operate digging equipment remotely and make the rescue safer. [9] Officials from the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration were on site as the rescue operation unfolded. The company has not yet started its accident investigation, Baker said, and won'''t until the miner is found. Hecla has chartered a plane to fly in remote controlled equipment to help them move through the debris. They expect the equipment to land in Coeur d'Alene tonight, and will haul it to Mullan. [2]

UPDATE: A rescue operation is underway in the wake of a collapse at a North Idaho Mine. [4]
Officials at the mine say there are an unknown number of miners trapped underground, and a rescue operation is underway. [17]
A Hecla spokesman says the two employees had just finished watering down blasted-out rock and ore when the collapse occurred about 75 feet from the end of the 6,150-foot deep tunnel. Officials say it's unclear if the entire 75-foot section collapsed, or only a portion of it, possibly leaving the miner trapped on the other side. [14] Instability in the stope ceiling, the cause of the initial collapse, is currently hindering rescue crew progress to the miner, Baker said. Before they can advance teams must re-secure the tunnel's structure to avoid further risk to employees. [5] "The employee's safety is our top priority and rescue efforts are underway to safely remove the material needed to access the area where the employee was working," Baker said. [9]
"The first rule for a mine rescue team or a rescue attempt is team safety," Baker said. [5] The localized cave-in occurred in a section of the mine 1.8km below the surface, in a vein about 670m long, HMC said in a press release. The company said it has not yet investigated the cause of the collapse because its focus was "100 per cent directed to rescuing the miner and ensuring the safety of the rescue team," according to the press release. [3]
The company declined to release the names of the men out of respect for the families involved. "The company is not yet focused on how or why this occurred - our current focus is 100 percent directed to rescuing the miner," Hecla CEO and President Phil Baker said at a press conference Saturday afternoon at Mullan City Hall. [5] As of Saturday afternoon, the mine was on lockdown. Hecla says it doesn't know why the collapse happened but says all of its efforts are concentrated on the rescue. [9] Progress had slowed Saturday afternoon because rescue teams had to secure overhead rock. [2]
No one has heard from the missing miner in more than 24 hours. Three safety rescue teams are busy at work trying to reach him. [8] '''Our current focus in 100 percent on the rescue of the employee and to ensure the safety of the rescue team.''' [2]
Miner Jerry Hagaman, who serves on the mine'''s safety committee, said the accident is a shocker to the employees. '''Hecla runs an extremely safe mine,''' he said. [2] Baker said company officials are in close contact with the trapped man'''s family and will be providing support and counseling as needed to family members and mine employees. [2] Bush, 29, was a contract employee working for United Mine Services at U.S. Silver Corp.''' s Galena Mine near Silverton, Idaho when he was hit by a falling slab of rock. He was a standout athlete at Kellogg High School and an All-America football player for the University of Montana Grizzlies. [2] Hecla mines silver, lead and zinc from the Lucky Friday and Greens Creek mines in Idaho's so-called "silver valley." [4] Lucky Friday is a mine for silver, lead and zinc, reports KXLY. In 2009, Hecla paid $177,500 fine for reported violations of "its National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System, NPDES, wastewater permit" claims reports. [12]
Located in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District near the town of Mullen in northern Idaho, the Lucky Friday unit has been mining silver, lead and zinc for 69 years. [7]
Hard rock mining is a difficult job, done under extreme conditions. Back during the Idaho centennial they gave tours of the Lucky Friday Mine and I went down to see for myself the conditions that miners toil under; very tight quarters, very hot, extremely humid and dangerous. [2]
Former Lucky Friday General Manager Mike Dexter, now Hecla manager of community affairs, told reporters and families of the miner that the company does have refuge chambers underground. It is believed the trapped miner may not have been able to find his way to a chamber when the rockfall occurred. [7] Hecla currently produces silver from two mines, Greens Creek and Lucky Friday, a mine that has been operational since 1942 and is one of the nation's deepest underground mines. [6]
In 2009, the company agreed to pay $177,500 in fines for violating federal clean water laws at Lucky Friday. EPA investigators said the mine exceeded discharge levels for metals such as lead, zinc, cadmium and suspended solids between September 2008 and February 2009. [6]
The cave-in, or ground fall, happened Friday night around 5:30, according to the mine's owner, Hecla Mining Company. [9] Hecla Mining Company has confirmed that there was some kind of ground fall break at the mine Friday evening. [18]
The Hecla Mining Company says two miners were working in the area when it happened. [10] "We're in a recovery effort. We're going to bring him out is what we're working towards right now," said Phil Baker, CEO of the Hecla Mining Company. [10]
As of 2:00 p.m. Mountain Time, rescue crews had advanced toward the miner about 25 feet. The mining company says the next steps will be more difficult and slower and they don't know how long the efforts may take. [9]
Section of the roof about 20 feet wide and 10 feet deep caved into the stope at the 6,150 foot level. A second miner in the area escaped injury. The names of the miners were not released, but The Spokesman-Review confirmed that they are brothers from a longtime Silver Valley mining family. Rescuers had cleared 25 feet of debris, but had their progress slowed for safety reasons. [2] The last major Silver Valley mining accident occurred last June when Tim Bush was killed by rock fall. [2]
The federal regulator has cited the mine for violations, but none in the last year specifically tied to the kind of accident that occurred Friday. [6]
The affected area is about a mile underground. The mine employs 275 people, but not all of those were underground at the time of the collapse. [17] Once the rescue is over, an investigation into what caused the collapse will begin. The second miner who was underground at the time of the collapse walked out unharmed. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed without prior permission. [8]
One miner made it out uninjured; the other is missing. "Essentially what's happened is the miner was in the stope and the ground above him fell, and this was about ten feet of material in terms of height and 20 feet wide and a number of feet long," Baker said. [9] During a press conference on Saturday, Baker said the collapse happened 6,150 feet below surface on a vein that is 2,200 feet long. [8]
Baker said the collapse was in an area where mine material is watered down and cooled before being shipped to the next phase of processing. [6] Baker said additional equipment was being flown in so crews could use a front-end loader remotely to dig away material clogging the tunnel. [6]

Rescue equipment has been brought to the Mullan mine from Montana and Washington to aide in the rescue operation. [4] Hecla Community Relations Representative Mike Dexter said the mine ceased production and has dedicated all resources to the rescue operation. [5]
Mine Safety and Health Administration officials were helping coordinate the rescue effort. [6] A federal Mine Safety and Health Administration official says the collapse blocked the mine. [16]
The federal Mine Safety and Health Administration confirmed Saturday that one miner was missing. [11] The other miner, who has not been identified, was still missing as of Saturday afternoon. [4] Hecla officials are expected to update the public and press Saturday afternoon. [4]
About 5:30 p.m. a section of ceiling, reportedly 10 feet in height by 20 feet in width and 75 feet in length, gave way in a stope (tunnel) at the mine's 6,150-foot level, according to Hecla officials. [5] One of the men is safe while the other-whom Hecla officials declined to identify-is still missing and believed trapped underground. [7] Hecla confirmed the ground fall break was shortly after 5:30 pm local time. Helca has yet to release any details about the number of miners trapped, nor their conditions. [12]

Company spokeswoman Melanie Hennessey refused to provide any other details, including whether other miners were involved when the collapse occurred, or whether there were any injuries. [16] Miners and community members huddled in groups to share information about the accident and rescue efforts. Others formed prayer circles. [2] The miners were working 75 feet from the end of the tunnel. It's unclear if the entire 75 foot section collapsed, or if only a part of it caved in, leaving space for the miner on the other side. [10] Three rescue teams have been working around the clock. Watch for continuing updates on this story throughout the day and for complete coverage on KHQ News and in Sunday's edition of The Spokesman-Review. [2]
