Avery rates London-based British Airways as "neutral'' and doesn't cover AMR or Continental, the fourth-biggest U.S. airline by traffic. Delta and Northwest won antitrust approval from U.S. regulators this month along with SkyTeam member Air France-KLM to operate more like a single entity by cooperating on route planning, marketing and setting prices. That was a defeat for American and British Airways, which have unsuccessfully sought antitrust exemption to cooperate on trans-Atlantic flights for years, and opposed the Northwest- Delta immunity request. The decision lets Eagan, Minnesota-based Northwest boost revenue it takes in through an agreement with KLM. It also lets Delta and Northwest join other carriers in steering passengers across their networks and operating more like a single entity by cooperating on route planning, marketing and setting prices. [1] April 30 (Bloomberg) -- AMR Corp.' s American Airlines and British Airways Plc may expand their marketing alliance and include Continental Airlines Inc. as the carriers seek to boost sales without a merger.[1] Airline alliances allow carriers to sell seats on each other's flights, sharing some of the revenue. British Airways, Europe's third-biggest carrier, disclosed the talks with Fort Worth, Texas-based American and Continental in a two-sentence statement, saying it was "was exploring opportunities for cooperation'' without specifying what those might entail.[1]
Adding Continental would extend the U.S. reach of the Oneworld alliance led by American and British Airways.[1]
British Airways said it was studying cooperating with the U.S. carriers, while Continental spokeswoman Julie King declined to comment.[1]
Continental Airlines Inc., the fourth-largest U.S. carrier, says it has decided to remain independent after weeks of speculation that it would merge with UAL Corp.' s United Airlines.[2]
Continental said it now will focus on a possible shift to a new global airline alliance. ''It's all about risk reduction,'' Soleil Securities Corp. analyst James M. Higgins said.[2] Continental Airlines, which carries more New York area passengers than any other airline, said Monday that it's not interested in merging with any other airlines at this time. Continental has its hub at Newark International Airport.[3]
Combined airlines would be financially stronger, but ''they'll be dominant, therefore the prices will go up. It might be good for them, but it's not good for the passenger,'' said Dan Lanser, owner of A Plus Travel Adventures in Green and president of the Mid-America Chapter of the American Society of Travel Agents.[2] While a merger is out, the airline is reportedly discussing a possible alliance with American Airlines to share some resources.[3]
The merger of Delta Air Lines Inc. and Northwest Airlines Corp. will form the world's largest carrier, in the rival SkyTeam group.[1] The nation's largest airline follows United, Continental, Northwest, Alaska and JetBlue Airlines, which have already started charging customers for checking extra bags.[3]

AMR rose 24 cents, or 2.8 percent, to $8.77 at 4 p.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading, while Houston-based Continental gained 42 cents, or 2.4 percent, to $17.98. The Pennsylvania city skipped past Los Angeles, which has enacted aggressive measures to fight its smoggy reputation and clear the air of pollution. WASHINGTON (AP) - New census data shows the number of Hispanics in the U.S. is continuing its rapid climb, with a 1.4 million increase in a year's time. 9 of 10 states with the highest growth rates are in the South.[4]
