SOURCESFIND OUT MORE ON THIS SUBJECTThe Internal Revenue Service said Thursday that it has about 108,000 unclaimed tax refunds worth more than $123 million, including nearly 250 checks for people whose last known addresses were in south Alabama and Mississippi. The 2008 refund checks, which were mailed earlier this year, were returned as undeliverable. The IRS said it hopes people whose names appear on lists will contact the agency to update their addresses and, in turn, receive the money they're owed. People may update their addresses using the "Where's My Refund" tool at IRS.gov, or by calling 1-800-829-1954. Respondents must provide a Social Security number, filing status and amount of refund on their 2008 return. "IRS wants to get these checks to their owners as quickly as possible," said IRS spokesman Dan Boone.

[2] The checks were in the mail. They were. They were returned to the U.S. Treasury as undeliverable. Now the Internal Revenue Service is turning to the media to try to get those refund checks in the hands of 109 local taxpayers. The IRS said Thursday that the countians, who are entitled to refunds totaling $170,315, didn't receive their checks because of errors in mailing addresses. A list of countians whose checks were returned by the post office are at the end of this story. The IRS can reissue the checks -- worth an average of $1,562 -- once taxpayers correct or update their addresses.
[3] The IRS might be looking for you, but not to collect your tax money. They could have a check for you. The Internal Revenue Service is looking for more than two thousand Colorado taxpayers who are due refund checks worth more than $2 million-- after those checks were returned as undeliverable. The refund checks, average $963 and can be claimed as soon as taxpayers update their addresses with the IRS. The IRS tells us they see this every year. and they know that money can make a big difference for many people. "It's a lot of money to be out there not in the hands of its rightful owners,"said IRS Spokesperson Karen Connelly.

Taxpayers can update their addresses and check the status of their refund with the " Where's My Refund? " tool on IRS.gov or call 1-800-829-1954.
[9] Undeliverable refund checks are returned to the IRS by the U.S. Postal Service because of mailing address errors. The IRS can reissue the checks once taxpayers correct or update their contact information. "Taxpayers should not miss out on getting their money back," Gregg Semanick, the IRS spokesman for Connecticut, said in a statement. "The IRS makes it easy for taxpayers to update their addresses and claim their refunds." The vast majority of tax refunds reach their rightful owners, according to the IRS, but each year some are undeliverable.
[10] Refund checks are missing in action for all sorts of reasons. Some younger adults leave the state but don't update their address with the IRS. [13] WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today announced that nearly 2,500 Ohioans have unclaimed tax refunds owed to them by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Out-of-date addresses have caused these refunds to be returned by the U.S. Postal Service, and more than 250 of these checks are waiting for Northwest Ohio taxpayers. '''Nearly 2,500 Ohioans can receive checks from the IRS if they update their mailing addresses,''' said Brown. '''With family budgets already stretched thin, Ohioans should not miss out on refunds they'''re owed. I encourage all Ohioans who have not received their refunds to contact the IRS to determine if there'''s a check waiting for them.''' Ohio taxpayers who have not received tax refunds can visit the '''Where'''s My Refund?''' page at
www.irs.gov or call to 1-800-829-1040 to check on their status.
[14] U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown Friday said nearly 2,500 Ohioans have unclaimed tax refunds owed to them by the Internal Revenue Service. Nearly 900 of those belong to people living in Northeast Ohio. Unclaimed checks waiting for residents include these locally: Columbiana County, 11; Mahoning County, 42; and Trumbull County, 18. With thin budgets, he said, residents shouldn't miss out on what they're owed.
[15] The IRS is looking for taxpayers whose refund checks can't be delivered because of outdated or erroneous mailing addresses. In New Jersey, the U.S. Postal Service this year has returned 3,075 undeliverable refund checks to the IRS, including 61 in Cumberland County and 97 in Atlantic County.
[16] Refund checks are mailed to a taxpayer's address on his/her tax return. A refund check is normally returned as undeliverable when a taxpayer moves without updating his or her address with either the U.S. Postal Service or the IRS. "It's hard to believe this many taxpayers don't miss their tax refunds, but it happens year after year," said IRS spokesperson for Idaho, Karen Connelly.
[5] Hales said reasons vary for refund checks being returned. Many times it's because a life change such as a marriage or divorce that causes an address change in which the IRS or U.S. Postal Service is not notified. To check online, taxpayers can go to irs.gov and "Where's My Refund" or they can call 1-800-829-1954.

[20] The average amount of the checks is Michigan is $1,181, and some people are due to receive more than one, according to the IRS. The number of undeliverable refunds rose by 16 percent this year, which coincides with a 16 percent increase in the number of refunds owed, Garcia said. That increase is likely due to changes in the tax law, such as the first-time home buyer tax credit, he said. Taxpayers can update their address online or via phone, Garcia said, warning people that the IRS does not send out unsolicited e-mails. "As soon as this news comes out, the crooks come out of the woodwork and they start sending out phony e-mails," he said.
[21] Some taxpayers are due more than one check. Average undeliverable refunds rose by 16 percent this year, which is in line with the 16 percent rise in average refunds for all tax returns in the latest filing season, the IRS said. Taxpayers usually can update their addresses with the "Where's My Refund?" tool at
IRS.gov. Taxpayers checking on a refund over the phone will be given instructions on how to update their addresses.

The simplest way to remedy an undeliverable refund is for taxpayers to opt for direct deposit, which is available to filers of both paper and electronic returns, Boone said.
[1] "If a person doesn't respond to any sort of notice. then (the refund) could stay on the books for 10, 20 or 30 years," Brunson said. "What generally happens is that the next filing season when the taxpayer submits their 2009 return and then they provide another mailing address, and as long as it's a good one, we will issue to them anything that we have on the books, any prior refunds coming to them, as well as the current refund if they have one coming for that particular period." Electronically filing your tax return and selecting direct deposit for your refund can avoid any delivery problems, he said. "It circumvents the postal system and therefore it can't get lost, it can't get stolen, and it can't get returned as undeliverable because it goes right into their savings or checking account, and that can be 10 days to seven days, as little as a week," Brunson said. Nationally, average undeliverable refunds rose by 16 percent this year, which is in line with the 16 percent increase in average refunds for all tax returns in the latest filing season.
